Review:
I enjoyed this book more than I had expected to. It's a book made for lower or middle level elementary students that teaches them about concepts of science and math but from a chicken's point of view. It's also interspersed with illustrations that help display the concepts.
Chirpy is our main character and she's tired of being in the coop. She wants to see what else is out there, particularly this place called "school". One day, she gets her wish. While there she witnesses a class building simple machines and a girl skip counting. Chirpy is interested in what she learned and brings the information with her when she returns to the coop. It might come in handy.
One of the things that worked very well for this book is how the topics are introduced and discussed. It didn't feel forced in just to teach Chirpy about science and math. I can buy a class working on simple machine. I can see a kid skip counting and another questioning what she's doing. It was woven in so seamlessly with humor that it made for an engaging read, even if it wasn't meant for somebody like me.
This is apparently going to be a series and I for one look forward to what other topics Krulik teaches.
