Review: TILL DEATH by Cirrus Rae

Are you ready for the final book, to my knowledge, in the Masked Mascs series?? I sure wasn't. Another erotic thriller by Cirrus Rae that had me panting and gasping for more. I was powerless against the draw of this book. I had issues downloading it this time, thanks computer, and I was practically buzzing all day until the issue got fixed and I was able to read it. Alba may be my favorite leading lady in this series and I hope she's yours as well. A harsher book than the two previous ones, and that's saying something, Till Death may not be for everyone so take care and don't force yourself past your comfort zone.

If you've secretly craved running from a killer through the woods, this book is written for you. If the sounds of hatchets and combat boots get you going. If you want to be tied up and forced to do those kinky things that linger in the back of your brain but you'll never admit it. Till Death has what you're looking for. Just make sure to check the content and trigger warnings before reading. Take care and have fun!

Alba

Halloween was supposed to be a distraction. A night of drinks, music, and friends to escape the sinking feeling that my girlfriend was slipping away from me. But one wrong turn up the mountain changes everything. A dead man at my feet. Two skull-masked strangers stalking me through the forest. And a choice that feels like it was never really mine to make.

Remy & Nik

We’ve been watching her for years. Soft, sweet little Alba. Living with a girl who doesn’t deserve her, walking around our apartment like she isn’t begging to be claimed. Tonight we finally get to take her. The forest is ours. The night is ours. And by the time the sun rises, our feisty kitten will be too.

Not just for tonight. Not just until morning. You'll be ours and we'll be yours. Till death.

The final book in the Masked Mascs series is here and I was once again way too excited to get the email with the ARC in it! I think this was probably my most anticipated book in the trio because it stars not one, but two masked women in it. I don’t read many poly books (a shame, but true) so I was excited to get the chance to read one.

The heat in this book is more of the same good heat from the previous two books. Kink and dub-con are present with Alba being initially reluctant and terrified, but at the same time not completely against the actions of Remy and Nik. I think this book has my overall favorite sex scenes, on average between the books. Little Lamb has my personal favorite scene, but Till Death has my favorite scenes total.

This is the only book in the series where we don’t get a single chapter from the POV of anyone but Alba. Nik and Remy’s thoughts and feelings are left up to what they say and the interpretation of the reader. I will admit, I did miss getting POV switches. I loved them in Into the Fire and even in Little Lamb, though they were very minimal, I still enjoyed them just for the change of pace and perspective. That being said, I don’t necessarily think the book suffers from the lack of other POVs. Till Death is basically a chase scene through the woods. There are places for Alba to hide, but Nik and Remy know the place better than her. It’s a cat-and-mouse game where we only see from the mouse’s perspective. It keeps the fear real and alive. Readers likely know going into this book how it will end, the other two in the series ended the same way, but Alba doesn’t. She thinks she’s fleeing for her life and she acts accordingly.

I found it easy to like Alba as a main character. She’s messy at times, but that’s to be expected with all the stuff being thrown at her in the span of a few hours. She’s somewhat realistic in how she reacts to Remy and Nik chasing her. She swings between angry and fearful, lashing out at them when she can. I think among the non-masc main characters, Alba might be my favorite. She’s a spitfire and there was one scene in particular that I really just fucking loved!

I didn’t love Remy and Nik as much though. They intrigued me, no doubt about it, but the lack of POV meant we had to rely solely on what Alba noticed and what they said to her. I would’ve preferred some time in their heads just to get a starting point at least. Thoughts on why they were doing this, why they wanted Alba so badly, things like that. Especially their thoughts on why they did certain things in the book.

I also think this is probably the cruelest and harshest book of the series. The other books there were fearful moments and hurt being caused, but this book felt grittier. It felt like Alba was, until a point, trying to flee for her life. Little Lamb has the feel of a slasher. Till Death has the feel of a hunt where Alba is the prey. They will have her, no matter what it takes.

I was just as pulled into this book as I was the previous two in the series. No doubt about it and I have no shame in it. This book had my stomach a bit more twisted than the others. There were moments when I was a little fearful that Nik and Remy’s plans weren’t just to claim Alba, but possibly to actually hurt her. One scene in particular had me worried and apprehensive. Beyond that part, it felt more like the rest of the series. Haunting and dark, but overall chasing pleasure in the taboo.
