Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents Yoon Ha Lee's companion to the best-selling and award-winning DRAGON PEARL, another space opera inspired by Korean mythology, this time told from the point of view of a nonbinary tiger spirit.
"A zesty mix of Korean folklore, magic, and science fiction that will
leave you longing for more adventures in the Thousand
Worlds!"--Rick Riordan, intro to DRAGON PEARL
"With crisp dialogue, a winning protagonist and a propulsive plot, this
tale is enormously entertaining."--New York Times Book Review of
DRAGON PEARL
Sebin, a young tiger spirit from the Juhwang Clan, wants nothing more than to
join the Thousand World Space Forces and, like their Uncle Hwan, captain a
battle cruiser someday. But when Sebin's acceptance letter finally arrives,
it's accompanied by the shocking news that Hwan has been declared a traitor.
Apparently the captain abandoned his duty to steal a magical artifact, the
Dragon Pearl, and his whereabouts are still unknown. Sebin hopes to help clear
their hero's name and restore honor to the clan.
Nothing goes according to plan, however. As soon as Sebin arrives for
orientation, they are met by a special investigator named Yi and Yi's
assistant, a girl named Min. Yi informs Sebin that they must immediately report
to the ship Haetae and await further instructions. Sebin finds
this highly unusual, but soon all protocol is forgotten when there's an
explosion on the ship, the crew is knocked out, and the communication system
goes down. It's up to Sebin, three other cadets, and Yi and Min to determine
who is sabotaging the battle cruiser. When Sebin is suddenly accused of
collaborating with the enemy, the cadet realizes that Min is the most dangerous
foe of all...
Yoon Ha Lee brilliantly turns the tables on DRAGON PEARL in another
unputdownable sci-fi adventure about what honor really means.

Review:
I was very excited to be able to take part in a tour for this book. A Rick Riordan Presents book with a nonbinary main character, perfect for me! Thank you to Rockstar and the publisher for providing me with a copy of the book and a chance to review it.
I thoroughly enjoyed Sebin as a main character. They had an interesting motivation, actually somewhat similar to that of Min from the previous book. They were headstrong and stubborn and sometimes that got annoying. But they were also a teenager out and about in the real world truly for the first time. Even when I didn’t always agree with their actions and thoughts, it was clear that it wasn’t coming from a space of ignoring the problems but rather from the space of someone trying to figure things out when being confronted with various situations. I have sympathy and respect for Sebin as a character.
The plot in this book was actually a lot more interesting to me than that of Dragon Pearl. In the first book I thought there were sections where the plot seemed to drag, that didn’t really exist in this book. Quite the opposite. There was constantly something interesting, something new, going on to keep my attention. I never felt bored or removed from the story.
This story also did some expansion on the world introduced in the first book. There were more details given, especially for the Tiger clans, but again none of it was overwhelming. The author walks a good line between providing enough information where the reader understands what’s going on without burying them in unnecessary descriptions and history. I personally loved it.
I don’t have a whole lot to say about the setting of this book. A lot of it took place on the ship. What I can say is that the author did a great job at keeping me engaged even though once Sebin was onboard the ship we never got off until the very end. Staying in one place can get frustrating in some books, it didn’t feel that way in this one.
I don’t really have an issue with anything in this book. Some things frustrated me, but that wasn’t because of the book. The characters acted the way I expected them to and, even if they pissed me off, it still fit with the story and made sense. None of this book felt forced or unnecessary.
One of the things that I personally enjoyed the most was seeing Min’s powers from another perspective. It was interesting and also brought about the discussion of how she knows when she’s using her powers for good reasons.
This book was amazing! I loved every second of it and read it in one sitting. I’d love another book with Sebin in it, especially one that allows Sebin and Min to work together again. I thought that Sebin offered a unique perspective and identity to the world, new thoughts and feelings and actions. They were distinct from Min, but the two aren’t complete opposites.
