"If Bora ever made it out into space, she was going to have a certain reputation and it was going be my fault. I wasn't really sorry though."
Review:
I got approved for an arc of Tiger Honor so decided to prioritize reading Dragon Pearl so that I was caught up on the story. Plus, it's a Rick Riordan Presents book so I knew I was going to read it eventually.
I loved Min. She was a great character who had clear motivations for doing what she was doing, and I loved them. She was doing it to find her brother and I can respect that. She wasn't portrayed as a perfect character, rather she was a kid learning what it means to be out on her own. I thought she fit well as a strong protagonist who was given weaknesses and feelings. (There was a slight hint of her being a bit too good, but I'm willing to write that off as her background.)
I loved the world and settings in this book. Each one appeared to be described differently enough from the others that it felt fleshed out, but there wasn't an overwhelming amount of description. I also really enjoyed how the species and history was presented to the reader. They could be a bit much at times, but it didn't really feel like it. None of the descriptions overwhelmed me. I would actually really like a prequel story of the various other things that have occurred throughout the history, but that's a personal thing.
The plot was the thing that has me the most apprehensive about the book. The main idea of the plot worked really well for me. I love the idea of going out to find her brother and prove him innocent. It was the execution that brought it down a bit. The beginning was good (not too fast-paced as it was setting up the story) but I found that after that it became a sort of wave. There would be interesting scenes, some dragging scenes, interesting scenes, and it continued that way. Around the 80% mark it got better, and I found that I was constantly hooked on the story.
I have some conflicted feelings about this book. I really enjoyed Min and the world-building for the story. Min was a strong but fallible character, and the world-building was enough to get the gist of the story without overwhelming the reader with too much information. I did, personally, find that it dragged a bit though. I personally found that the good outweighed the bad and kept the book quite enjoyable for me.
