Review:
I was interested in this book from the get-go. Something about the cover drew me in and the summary just made it more interesting. I was especially interested because one of the characters was nonbinary. I love to read books with people like me. I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I loved the plot of this book. These two individuals, along with several others, are taking part in a cooking competition. I like food and queer books, so this fit perfectly into my tastes. I thought the book was well-balanced with a good amount of time dedicated to showing the show happen while also showing the personal, or as personal as it gets, lives of the characters. The two characters had a good amount of time to bond and get to know more about each other.
I am obsessed with these characters. I loved both of them so much and only wanted the absolute best for both of them. Dahlia was an amazing character who was desperately trying to figure out things about herself. I loved her and watching her grow and find her confidence. She also had a protective side that I just adored. London is everything I could have wanted in a character. They were strong and weak. They were being their true self even if others were uncomfortable or negative. I loved both of these characters, but something about London (possibly that they are nonbinary) just gives them a place in my heart.
I also enjoyed, most, of the side characters. This included the other contestants as well as London and Dahlia’s family members. You don’t get a whole lot of time with them or a whole lot of detail, but I liked the interactions we were given with them. There were a couple of stand-out characters (avoiding names so that there are no spoilers) that I especially adored. There was only a couple of characters that I didn’t like, but they never felt fake. Every character, even the minor ones, felt like real characters that would exist in the space of this contest and these characters’ lives.
The emotions in this book drove me to tears at times. I was already really loving this story and these characters, but these emotions drove me over the edge. They were varied and well-written. There were times when it was exciting, the characters were so happy, and it couldn’t help but rub off on the reader. Other times the emotions weren’t positive, but they were still clearly conveyed and passed off to the reader.
I’ll be completely blunt, I don’t think there was anything I disliked about this book. Of course, this review is personal so others might have other ideas, but I absolutely adored every second of this book.
This book exceeded every hope I ever could have had for it. It kept me hooked from the beginning, made me absolutely adore these characters, and left me wanting more from this author and with these characters. I plan on rereading it. I’m also hoping to eventually get a final copy so that I can annotate my ARC.
