Review: Tell Me How You Really Feel

Tell Me How You Really Feel Tell Me How You Really Feel by Aminah Mae Safi
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Finished on April 8, 2021
Favorite Scene/Quote: "The nice thing about life, and not the movies, is that there's no curtains, no The End. You can always write your own story."

I thought this was a really cute story. The characters are likeable, for the most part, and their situations are realistic. It’s adorable to watch the two of them get forced together for the project and watch how they deal with their circumstances.

Sana is a cheerleader at the high school hiding secrets from her family. She once asked out Rachel but was turned down because Rachel suspected foul play. What she doesn’t know is that Sana was honest, she had a crush on Rachel and, unknown to others, it wasn’t just in the past. Rachel is a film student who has to finish her independent study film for her teacher. Her teacher had written a letter of recommendation based on the film that’s yet to be completed and is prepared to contact the school to come clean to them if Rachel can’t turn in a finished, good project. After an accident with a camera, the two are forced to work together on the project.

I really love Sana. She’s so positive and nice and is just amazing. She’s come out of the closet, but everyone seems content to just ignore that fact for the most part. She’s also doubting herself and what she wants out of life. In all honesty, that was probably the single most relatable thing in the book. A character who tries so hard to be perfect having doubts and insecurities. Rachel comes from a poor family as a scholarship student, and she has a thing about pretty people. She was a bit harder to like because of the obvious issue she had with attractive people. It’s not that I don’t think there are certain perks given to pretty people, but Rachel had a deep seeded contempt for them.

It was really nice to watch the two get together. The two were adorable together and their conversations and banter were so nice. Even when they were fighting about something it was enjoyable and fun. The two had to work through personal issues they were having to get together and it was nice to watch them grow. It was also nice that the author didn’t end with a happily ever after because that’s not really realistic for a high school romance.

My personal favorite part of this book was Sana confronting her family. The family that had, knowingly or not, caused her so much pain and stress. It was amazing.

I really liked this book and I’ll likely see about checking out more of Safi’s works. It was great and I recommend it for anyone looking for a cute, YA romance.
