Review:
Okay, so I heard about this book a while before I read it. Hell, Erin was part of my writing academy class, and I pretty sure there was an announcement in the Discord when the book got released. I’ve been on a queers playing D&D kick for a bit, so another book about that exact topic was exactly what I wanted. I’ll just summarize my review really quickly up here: read this book. OMG read this book. This book is now added to my list of books to recommend whenever I am asked about it.
The romance in this book is just *chef’s kiss*. I really enjoyed how it was handled. There was an attraction between the two characters, but there was also tension because of everything that happened prior. It added a layer that had to be pulled back and worked through and I personally thought it was handled pretty well. The author allowed the characters time to grow closer and talk through their issues. Add in some tension from them denying their chemistry and you’ve got a ticking love bomb.
The chemistry between these characters was just so good. I did feel like it took a bit for them to fully settle into it, but I think that might have been more based on their circumstances rather than a writing issue. But once the chemistry was set up, it was amazing. Especially towards the end when they were together and were allowed to just explore what being together actually meant for them.
One of my favorite parts of this book was getting to see some of the D&D sessions. I love a good D&D related book, I’ve read several at this point, and it’s always interesting to see how they approach the D&D in the book. I prefer books that give me a taste of both sides of it. They let me see some fantasy in-character interactions as well as what the characters themselves are feeling as they sit around the table. It allows for some fantasy and adventure in the middle of what is usually a contemporary romance book.
I did have like one complaint with this book: it felt like some of the plot points weren’t fully fleshed out. I don’t want to spoil which ones, but I did want to bring that up. It also may just be my own personal preference or that I missed something, so I hope that doesn’t stop anyone from reading the book.
It's hard sometimes to review books that I read months ago, especially if I didn’t take the world’s best notes on the book. But this book wasn’t that difficult, because I remembered what I loved about the book. I remembered the chemistry and the push and pull. I remembered the roleplay and the D&D. I remembered not loving how some of the plot points were handled but still loving the book as a whole. This book has quickly taken a spot on my “recommend to everyone” list and I am definitely going to have to get a physical copy at some point in the future. I just want a growing collection of queer D&D books that I love.
