Pride Month Book Recommendations

Here is a roundup of the first 9 days of queer book recommendations that I have! These are, mostly, books or authors that I've read and loved! The Goodreads page for the book is included and purchase links are attached to the covers if you want to buy the book yourself.

Day One

Title: Dragonfall

Author: L.R. Lam

Publication Date: May 2, 2023

Summary: Long-banished dragons, revered as gods, return to the mortal realm in the first in this magical new epic fantasy trilogy from a bestselling author.

Long ago, humans betrayed dragons, stealing their magic and banishing them to a dying world. Centuries later, their descendants worship dragons as gods. But the gods remember, and they do not forgive.

Thief Arcady scrapes a living on the streets of Vatra. Desperate, Arcady steals a powerful artifact from the bones of the Plaguebringer, the most hated person in Lumet history. Only Arcady knows the artifact's magic holds the key to a new life among the nobles at court and a chance for revenge.

The spell connects to Everen, the last male dragon foretold to save his kind, dragging him through the Veil. Disguised as a human, Everen soon learns that to regain his true power and form and fulfil his destiny, he only needs to convince one little thief to trust him enough to bond completely--body, mind, and soul--and then kill them.

Yet the closer the two become, the greater the risk both their worlds will shatter.

Day Two

Title: The Hills We Run From

Author: Ellis Mae

Publication Date: February 8, 2023

Summary: Edinburgh has always seemed like a magical place; with its rolling hills and towering abodes, everything seems possible. Perhaps, its just magical enough that Saatchi, illustrious marathon runner and notorious college student, can finally leave her past grievances beneath her thrumming feet. Even newcomer Emmylou, running away from an oppressive past, may be able to find exactly what she's been missing out on in from under her mother's heel. But, is it magic enough for the both of them? Or are they destined to trip before the finish line? Saatchi just wants to run. It's all she's ever known and it's all she's ever loved. The cobblestones of Edinburgh thrumming below her feet are her only peace of mind as she grieves her past self. But she's lost all of the freedom with the mounting pressure to make her once adored hobby a career. Emmylou is on the run. She's finally put herself first and decided to take a leap of faith that's led her to a country she's never even visited, all to escape a controlling mother. The problem is, she thought it'd be easy once she made that leap but, instead, it's only made her realize she's just as lost as before.

Day Three

Title: They Ain't Proper

Author: MB Guel

Publication Date: May 18, 2023

Summary: 1880s, The Wild West.

An easy, solitary life on the outskirts of Ghosthallow is all Lou Ramirez wants. They want to buy their house plans and live their quiet life far from townsfolk’s prying eyes. That plan, however, hits a bump when instead of house plans, a house wife is delivered to their door instead.

Clementine Castellanos desperately needs a way out from under her family debt, and it seems as though selling her services as a wife is the only way to do it. Expecting a rough, harsh man to be her new husband, Clementine is pleasantly surprised to instead be dropped off at the ranch of an equally surprised Lou.

Lou would rather Clementine leave them to their lonely existence, but Clementine is too charmed by the quiet and mysterious rancher to give up. She may have come into Lou’s life easily, but she certainly isn’t planning to leave that way. Undeterred by Lou’s prickly demeanor, Clementine is determined to get her reluctant spouse to open up to her.

When the past comes back to haunt the pair, the fight for their independence—and their love—may become more deadly than either of them ever expected.

Day Four

Title: Breakthrough

Author: Kris Bryant

Publication Date: May 1, 2018

Summary: Kennedy Wells is desperate to get back her dream job writing for Mainstream, Waters Publishing’s celebrity magazine. She’s worked too hard over the years to have it snatched away because of one tiny indiscretion that ended with a giant lawsuit. After five months of writing mind-numbing articles about current events, her boss agrees to let her get back to reporting on the rich and famous after one last story.

A born and bred city girl, Kennedy is sent to cover fishing in Alaska, which has her feeling just like a fish out of water. When Brynn Coleman, director of Alaska’s Wildlife Rescue and Sanctuary, comes to her rescue time after time, Kennedy can’t help but lower her guard and open herself up to Brynn’s standoffish charm. Falling for the sexy ranger is one thing, but is the possibility of love worth giving up a career she’s always dreamed of?

Day Five

Title: LGBTQ Youth and Education

Author: Cris Mayo

Publication Date: December 13, 2013

Summary: Based on the diverse experiences of LGBTQ students and their allies, this essential volume brings together in one resource the major issues that schools must address to improve the educational outcomes for gender and sexual minority students--as well as all students. Many of these issues involve negative school-based experiences that teachers and administrators need to be aware of as they interact with students on a daily basis, including those that encourage dropping out, substance abuse, and disproportionate thoughts of suicide. This insightful work not only examines the challenges of discrimination, harassment, and alienation that LGBTQ youth face, but it also captures students' resilience and creativity in organizing against those challenges. The text includes teaching strategies, innovative projects, curricular revisions, and policy initiatives that have had positive effects on LGBTQ learning, aspirations, and school climate.

Book Features:

Offers a nuanced portrait of students, showing how issues of race, gender, gender identity, and class shape and complicate their experience. Examines the history and contemporary movements for LGBTQ rights. Describes a variety of discipline-based approaches to teaching students to think about LGBTQ-related concerns. Shows examples of youth organizing into extracurricular groups or creating school- and community-based interventions. Highlights the role of online communities and web-based resources.

Author: Karelia Stetz-Water

Publication Date: January 31, 2023

Summary: Business consultant Rose Josten might not have officially reached “pug lady” middle age, but she’s already got the pugs—along with their little Gucci coats and trash-lovin’ appetites. Which is exactly when former filmmaker Ash Stewart enters camera left, and Rose’s world suddenly goes full technicolor . . .

Ash never looks at anyone. Not since her ex ripped her heart from her chest in Spielberg-esque style, crushing Ash’s reputation, dreams, and directorial career in one brutal blow. But Rose is altogether different. She’s curvy, beautiful, and just so damn put together. And her business expertise might be Ash’s best bet for getting her last film—and her last chance—financed. Now if they can just keep their attraction under wraps, Ash’s lost dream could finally come true. But are they creating movie magic . . . or setting the stage for disaster?

Cara Bradley compensates for her family’s shallow celebrity lifestyle by devoting her life to helping others, while keeping to the background. She reluctantly commits to a year of puppy walking a four-legged whirlwind named Pickwick so she can film regular segments for a local news program while helping promote the McIntyre Training Center, but she is unprepared for the changes that the driven and aloof Lenae will bring to her life.

Blindsided by love, can Lenae and Cara learn to trust and guide each other toward a new vision for their future?

The only race Lainey Hughes runs is away from her past and into the bottom of a bottle. After a devastating injury in a war zone, she’s continued her photojournalist career in the natural beauty and warmth of Uganda. A trip to Alaska to cover dog sledding is not what she wants, but the lure of a paying gig proves too tempting.

Lainey trusts her camera and Scotch trusts her dogs—and neither cares much what the other thinks…not at first.

Love runs hot in the cold Alaskan night in this long-awaited romance from D Jordan Redhawk.

Maybe that’s why she says yes to teaching a car maintenance class at the local high school.

High school literacy teacher Pru Glynn is happy with her life just as it is. She has a great job, close friends, and a loving family. She’d like to find a wonderful woman to share it with, but she isn’t about to settle for just anyone. When beautiful Sophia McGovern swings into town, Pru can’t deny an attraction, but Sophia’s itinerant lifestyle doesn’t fit in with her deep-set roots and strong ties to family and friends.

So when she finds her family's secret book of hexes, she's itching to use it to banish her mama's money troubles. She just has to keep it quieter than a church mouse -- not exactly Delpha's specialty.

Trouble is, Katybird Hearn is hankering to get her hands on the spell book, too. The daughter of a rival witching family, Katy has reasons of her own for wanting to learn forbidden magic, and she's not going to let an age-old feud or Delpha's contrary ways stop her. But their quarrel accidentally unleashes a hex so heinous it resurrects a graveyard full of angry Hearn and McGill ancestors bent on total destruction. If Delpha and Katy want to reverse the spell in time to save everyone in the Hollow from rampaging zombies, they'll need to mend fences and work together.

Wildlife photographer Pat Ryan is duped into volunteering her talents to the cause, but she wants no part of the overzealous Dr. Cambridge.

While they spend most of their time sparring and bickering, an early season hurricane finds them fighting nature – instead of each other – to save the wetlands and the birds that brought them together.

Aimée, a non-binary Anishinaabe middle-schooler, is on a class trip to offer gifts to Paayehnsag, the water spirits known to protect the land. While stories are told about the water spirits and the threat of the land being taken over for development, Aimée zones out, distracting themselves from the bullying and isolation they’ve experienced since expressing their non-binary identity. When Aimée accidentally wanders off, they are transported to an alternate dimension populated by traditional Anishinaabe figures in a story inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

To gain the way back home, Aimée is called on to help Trickster by hunting down dark water spirits with guidance from Paayehnsag. On their journey, Aimée faces off with the land-grabbing Queen and her robotic guards and fights the dark water spirits against increasingly stacked odds. Illustrated by KC Oster with a modern take on their own Ojibwe style and cultural representation, Rabbit Chase is a story of self-discovery, community, and finding one’s place in the world.

Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs

Author: Jennifer Finney Boylan

Publication Date: April 21, 2020

Summary: This is a book about dogs: the love we have for them, and the way that love helps us understand the people we have been.

It’s in the love of dogs, and my love for them, that I can best now take the measure of the child I once was, and the bottomless, unfathomable desires that once haunted me.

There are times when it is hard for me to fully remember that love, which was once so fragile, and so fierce. Sometimes it seems to fade before me, like breath on a mirror.

But I remember the dogs.

In her New York Times opinion column, Jennifer Finney Boylan wrote about her relationship with her beloved dog Indigo, and her wise, funny, heartbreaking column went viral. In Good Boy, Boylan explores what should be the simplest topic in the world, but never is: finding and giving love.

Good Boy is a universal account of a remarkable story: showing how a young boy became a middle-aged woman—accompanied at seven crucial moments of growth and transformation by seven memorable dogs. “Everything I know about love,” she writes, “I learned from dogs.” Their love enables us pull off what seem like impossible feats: to find our way home when we are lost, to live our lives with humor and courage, and above all, to best become our true selves.

If you like what I do, consider giving me a follow on social media or consider sharing or donating my GCLS GoFundMe. I appreciate any help or shares that I can get! Every little bit matters. Thank you for reading!!

Happy Pride Month

It is officially June which is the start of a bunch of posts that I have planned for Pride Month. I'm not going to list what I have planned because I don't want to feel bad if I don't have the energy to follow through. There are a few things that I can mention though.

    1. Book Recommendations!!!!

    • I have plans to list a bunch of books that I have read and loved in hopes of sharing them with people who may not know about them! I did this last year on my Instagram and I highly recommend checking them out, but I may be biased. This year I plan on showing off some new books I've read since then as well as bringing up some past favorites that I didn't include last year.

    2. Interviews!

    • I have 12 interviews scheduled for this month! These authors range from middle-grade to YA to adult books. From horror to romance. These are authors I love and admire and authors whose books I've been desperately waiting for a chance to read. I hope you enjoy these interviews! My first one actually went up yesterday, it was an interview with Andrew Joseph White, author of HELL FOLLOWED WITH US and THE SPIRIT BARES ITS TEETH.

I hope you stick around and see what all I have in store for you! I'm also going to be posting on my Instagram as well this month. My Instagram will also be home to my GCLS Conference content! If you want to see my adventures in Denver, make sure to give me a follow over there. I'm also still trying to raise money for GCLS, so if you want to help support me here is my GoFundMe. Any donations and shares mean a lot to me, thank you so much!

"You're sure about this?"

"Absolutely not, but let's do it anyway."

Banished from the only home she has ever known and still reeling from the knowledge of what she truly is, and just how many people want to kill her, Tannin has no choice but to ally with dangerous figures from her past to survive. In a stronghold ruled by wargs, Tannin must learn to step up and claim her blood heritage. As her own monstrous abilities develop, Tannin finds that she likes the taste of power. But she isn't the only one hungering for it.

Desperate to correct her past mistakes, Ava - along with Tannin's old friend Flint - leaves the safety of Armodan to follow the wargs. With her fledgling skills as a druidic healer, Ava strives to prove herself useful and earn her place in Tannin's new life. Finally free of the constraints of royal life, Ava discovers that she has only scratched the surface of her own darker powers.

But power never comes without a price.

The rise of a queen.

A cruel betrayal.

And a nation on the brink of tearing itself apart.

Schemes and treacheries are brewing and boiling over on all sides. Unravelling them seems impossible. Perhaps surviving them is too.

I was so thrilled when I was told that I could take part in this tour! Remnants of Blood and Remnants of Power are both books that I've been wanting to read but just haven't had the time to yet! This tour gave me the perfect opportunity and I'm thrilled that I did.

I loved this book! The author has a writing style that immediately meshed with what I wanted to read and I found myself drawn in to every page of the book. I was constantly on edge waiting for what was going to happen next and I loved every second of it.

This book has uch a unique sense of story-telling. T he multiple POVs and the world in which these characters exist in made for an amazing reading experience because nothing truly ever felt stale.
