Review:
I ? I had been putting off reading this book for so long and, thinking back I can't come up with why I was doing that. I've already read Not the Marrying Kind and enjoyed it, but just never felt drawn to read this book.
I am genuinely really glad that I finally got around to this book. I won't claim it's one of my favorites, there is too much competition for that claim, but it is an amazing book. This book blends just the right amount of sweet, humor, and heartache. It took me a bit to get into the groove of reading this book, but I'm blaming that off coming off of Jae's shape-shifter books.
I adore this book especially since it had a relationship between an asexual and allosexual character. In my opinion, I think Jae did a good job at explaining the concept to readers that might not know what asexuality is as well as showing the struggles that Holly has had to face in past relationships. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It sucks at times to hear what Holly, and other asexual people, have gone through and how people treat them but I really enjoyed Jae's writing. She does a great job at writing characters and their emotions in a way that you feel them.
The relationship between Holly and Leo is probably one of my favorites that Jae has written. The relationship was built off assumptions and preconceived ideas and it slowly grew. They inched towards each other until they were comfortable and could talk to each other. Jae always does a good job at writing relationships but something about this one just made it feel a lot softer and sweeter than the other romances. I don't know if it's because of Holly being asexual and the two finding new ways to be intimate or if it's something else.
This book did leave me in a strange position though. I read Not the Marrying Kind before this book and that follows the romance between Sasha and Ashley. This book though, it left me in the position of not really liking Ashley. I understand some of what she was doing, but other times it just sat wrong. I don't know, I just kind of wish Ashley hadn't annoyed me in this book.
This was an excellent book. It definitely has one of my favorite relationships and it left me with a warm feeling sitting in my chest. It's a charming romance that starts off with the two not liking each other because of preconceived ideas. It's a slow-burn with some mild angst and misunderstandings. It's a sweet, warm romance and I regret that it took me so long to read this book.
