Review:
I need to profusely thank Forever and Hachette for allowing me to read an advanced copy of this book! I was interested in this book because it starred a transgender main character, but I truly did not expect to adore it as much as I did. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I've never read an Alexis Hall book prior to this one. There's been several that have interested me, I've just never made it to reading them yet. After reading this book, I need to get my hands on any and all of them that I can. This book was enough to drag me into a mild obsession. This book was a perfect blend of romance, angst, and playfulness.
The characters in this book and the connections between them were absolutely amazing! I adore Viola and Gracewood and Lady Marleigh and Miranda and Lady Lilimere. I love them all and I love them all so deeply. Side note, I really, desperately want more of Lady Lilimere, who do I sell my soul to to make that happen? On a more serious note, these characters were amazing! There was such an authentic connection between them that was clearly built on love and respect.
One thing I was slightly worried about was that this was a historical fiction book starring a transgender main character. I was quite worried about how that would be handled and whether it would lead to any sort of violence against Viola. I was actually really surprised by how it was handled. With the exception of Duke Gracewood having to get used to the situation and some comments made by other minor characters, this really wasn't an issue. Viola is surrounded by people that absolutely adore her and love her through everything. It was amazing how they reacted, I know people now who wouldn't react that way.
This is another book where I sometimes struggle to find the words to describe. I have to reign in my desire to gush about the characters and actually talk about something else. It's just hard for me with some books, but I will try.
Let's talk about the plot right now. I had one minor issue with the book, primarily where it concerns Miranda, but that was minor and did also fit the plot. It wasn't a big issue that put me off the book, but it was something that had me go "hmm." and ponder whether it was something that I enjoyed. I'll admit that one thing I really enjoyed about the book was that the main angst and issue wasn't about Viola. Again, a historical book featuring a transgender main character made me think that the main issue was going to have to do with her. It was nice to see that it wasn't.
This book was absolutely wonderful and I am very thankful to have been given an advanced copy to read and review. It was a stunning read and I really need to get my hands on more Alexis Hall books. If you want a romance absolutely full of heart and love, give this book a chance. I tend to avoid historical books because history and LGBTQ+ people don’t always go well, but this one was perfect! It was beautiful and heart-wrenching. You grew to love these characters and it was amazing to watch them grow.
