Review: SWITCH by Kat Blackthorne

There are some books that linger in your head and you want to read them, you know you do. But it just...doesn't happen for a while. sWitch is one of those books. I knew I wanted to read it. I really did. Every part of it just screamed for me to read it. But it took months for me to actually be in the right mood and place to read it. And I am so glad that I did. I was hooked to this book like a fish on a line. Certain parts are certainly ingrained into my brain and I don't think I want to get rid of them. My only problem right now? I don't own a physical copy of the book (or the RIP book box edition).

If you're in the mood for a taboo romcom, fucking your brother's girlfriend, and sex both physically and virtually, this book will give you all that you desire.

You made this mess. Clean it up.

I’ve been slowly getting into books that are marketed/labeled as being “dark romance” or something similar at least. sWitch is one of those books that kept popping up when I search for sapphic dark romances. It’s labeled as a dark rom-com and that tag mostly fits, I’ll get into more about that later.

So, after a couple of months of considering it, I finally got around to giving it a try. It’s on Kindle Unlimited, so if it sounds up your alley, I recommend giving it a glance. I’m going to try and avoid spoilers in this review, but some things may slip through the cracks.

From the beginning, I was obsessed with these characters. I don’t know what it is about Remy and Fauna, but I was hooked on them the second that they were introduced. Remy starts talking about stealing her brother’s girlfriend early on in the book, and I was immediately for it. It helped a lot that Remy rationalized part of their plan in a way that made sense to me.

And I just found it entertaining as hell. Remy is a full on simp for Fauna.

Fauna on the other hand is just an absolute sweetheart. There aren’t as many chapters written from her point of view, but even from Remy’s chapters she’s so unbelievably sweet. A hint of badass and kink in her, but genuinely just a charming character.

The relationship between the two of them is built in shambles a bit. Very out of order and disorganized. Kat writes the attraction between them clear as day. It’s electrifying how much chemistry these two have with each other. But the relationship itself has some shaky foundations. Most of it is smoothed over by the end and I personally am choosing to believe that the two go on to live a nice, long life with each other. But there’s a chance that not everyone connects with the relationship like I did.

The plot was pretty good. I was very invested in the story, and the pages were flying by. Pacing wise, it’s decently quick but that quickness is at least pretty consistent. It doesn’t drag and then suddenly speed up a bunch. The book is about 250 pages, so the story moves fast to hit all the different beats that the author wanted to tackle. I think it works, but I also think that some of the plot points, primarily tied to Fauna and V for Valin, would’ve benefitted from some extra time spent on them.

The writing style was pretty well done. I think the author did a fantastic job at keeping the two characters’ personalities and voice separate. A couple of minor issues, weird sentences or typos, that caused momentary pauses while I was reading, but nothing too bad. It was a good story and well-written. Nothing about this book’s writing style would put me off reading another Kat Blackthorne book.

It was also fucking hot as hell. The movie theater scene? The arcade scene? Fuck! Those scenes are just randomly popping into my head. Just constant reminders of how much I loved those scenes and how hot I found them to be. I love a well-written sex scene, especially when it moves the plot along or deepens the bond between the characters.

Now about the genre: I don’t quite know if it fits as a dark rom-com. It’s definitely got the rom-com vibes. But the darkness will depend on your definition of “dark”. I personally thought it was pretty tame. Like a very light shade of gray. I had expected something a bit more, especially with cheating being involved, but the book does work without darker elements. It also helped make sure I continued to like the characters. I think, with the relationships that we are given in the story, it wouldn’t have made sense for the book to be much darker than it was. Especially not with the cheating aspect. Plus, I don’t think “dark” was really what the author was going for. It’s more of a taboo rom-com than a dark one.
