I discovered Let the Mask Fall at some point in the last couple of months when I was digging through lists and lists of sapphic dark romances. The name popped up once and then it never seemed to go away. I saw it everywhere. When I saw someone with a proof copy of it up for trade…I couldn’t miss my chance.

I’m being watched.
It isn’t a figment of my imagination. Someone is watching me, following me, standing over me as I sleep.
I don’t know who she is, or what she wants.
But I’m determined to find out.
Blair:
She sleeps soundly, her chest rising and falling with each breath.
She’s been living a lie. The mask she wears to hide her true nature is stuck to her face.
I’m the only who can set her free.
-----
Danielle is running from her old life. She has a new house, a new job, and a new secret admirer. An admirer who likes to break into her home and watch her sleep.

This book was a doozy! And I mean that in the best way possible. It took me a bit to read not because of the plot or writing, but because my brain just didn’t want to. Eventually, when my brain was more focused, I flew through the pages. Every time that I had an extra minute, I picked it up and tried to see how far I could get into it.
Hats off to the author for managing to strike a balance between the darker scenes, romance scenes, and sex scenes. It couldn’t have been easy to blend and balance those scenes, especially when some of them go against each other. But I think G.E. did an amazing job at it. The book never felt like straight up erotica (no shade to erotica, but it’s not what I look for in a romance book), but the sex also added something to the romance. It helped the plot move and allowed the characters to begin lowering their walls.
And what can I say about the characters?
Blair is…Blair is hot, I’m just gonna come outright and say it. I want to stress that this is not me condoning the fictional actions that take place in this book, but damn I just found Blair to be really hot. I like someone who speaks frankly and without feeling as though they need to mince their words. And despite what the trigger warnings may present, she does genuinely care about Danielle. It’s not always in the right way, but care is present.
Danielle on the other hand is a sweetheart. We learn a lot about what has happened to her in the past that made her who she is today. It’s revealed in a way that doesn’t minimize the impact and in fact highlights the trauma that she has suffered because of it. It’s not trauma porn, just being blunt about what living in that world can do to a person’s mental health. But beyond all that, and beyond her being like Blair, she is a sweet character. Not to everyone, but to Blair.
It’s interesting to see a romance where the two characters will happily lose everyone else in the world if it means that they’d still have each other. Is it healthy? Who knows. But it makes for really interesting reading. Especially as Blair peels those layers away from Danielle. As she forces her to confront the truth that she had been burying for so long.
The plot was a little predictable at times, but it was written in a way where I still wanted to see how everything was going to play out. Even if I had an idea in my head of what was going to happen, I wanted to read it to find out if that was true.
Between this book and a couple of others that I’ve read recently, I think I can say that I’m a fan of dark romance. Sapphic dark romance, specifically. It’s an escapist sort of thing. I don’t want someone to stalk me in real life, but in a book, I don’t mind that being part of it. I don’t mind a character being single-mindedly obsessed with someone else. I find it fun.
