Review:
I am beyond lucky that I get to review this book!

The premise of this book caught me from the get-go. Iris, a teenage girl, started an amateur detective agency after her sister, Stella, went missing…and she started investigating the disappearance. When her ex-girlfriend, Heather, also goes missing, the agency starts looking into the disappearance. Even if that means also checking out her podcast where she discussed Stella’s disappearance. Now Iris has to deal with old wounds being reopened, a suspicious detective, and dealing with her ex-best friend turned enemy. How could I possibly not be interested in something like that?

The writing in this book is absolutely phenomenal. I thought Wlosok did a great job at writing authentic teen voices and dialogue. She also did really well at writing tense situations. Where her writing shined though was in Iris’ emotions. The teenager is struggling through so much and it shows. Her emotions are constantly fluctuating as she tries to deal with the situation she has found herself in.

Iris made for one hell of a lead. She doesn’t always make the smartest choices, but the reader can also understand why she is making the choices that she is. Especially since she’s a teenager and they aren’t always the smartest people in the world. She had a lot of emotions because of everything that had happened over the past year and it made her a very sympathetic character. She’s filled with trauma and has every reason to not want to be involved, but she also doesn’t trust the police to handle the case correctly. She sure is something!

I’ll admit that I was a little wary about this book at first. Mysteries and thrillers can be hit or miss for me. I’m a bit easily freaked out by books and movies, so I always worry that I’m going to get too scared or anxious to finish a book. Thankfully that wasn’t a problem with this book. Not even close actually. While the book did have moments that were tense and stressful, I never felt anxious about them. Rather I just wanted to know what was next and how the situation was tying into the current plot. It kept me constantly on my toes.

While I absolutely loved Iris, I especially loved her friends. Imani and Sammy add a good amount of levity to the situations when it starts to become too dark. They’re both skilled in their own rights and the three of them make for a formidable detective agency. I’ll admit that I also have a soft spot for Imani because they are nonbinary.

I also thought the mystery of the disappearance was great! I definitely couldn’t have guessed who was doing what. Wlosok wrote the mystery very well with key information being slowly revealed to the reader as the characters continue on with their investigation.

The podcast was one of my favorite parts o this book. It read like I would expect it too and I love the different approaches that Heather took while presenting the story. It was emotional, especially when Stella was reacting to what she had just listened to.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! From the characters that seemed fully fleshed out to the mystery that always had me guessing to the action that left me on edge waiting for what was next. Wlosok did a great job at weaving a story that kept me thoroughly engaged from the very beginning. I would breeze through 100 pages and not even notice.
