I
am so happy I was able to host a spot on the I SURVIVED, THE GALVESTON HURRICANE,
1900 by Lauren Tarshis Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar
Book Tours. I don’t often read any form of historical fiction book, but I’m not completely against it. I was very intrigued when I was offered the chance to read this book for a blog tour. I’ve never read an I Survived book before, but I might read some now. Make sure to read my review and check out the giveaway!

More than a century later, the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 is still America's deadliest disaster. Lauren Tarshis's story of one child surviving the horrible event churns with page-turning action and bold hope.
The city of Galveston, Texas, was booming. Perched on an island off the southern coast of Texas, Galveston had been founded in the 1830s. By 1900, it was Texas's richest and most important city. Boats loaded up with American cotton and wheat steamed from Galveston to countries around the world. Arriving ships were crowded with immigrants. The streets, paved with crushed oyster shells, sparkled like they'd been sprinkled with diamonds.
True, this glittering city was prone to flooding. But just a few years before,
a weather forecaster had said the idea of a hurricane striking Galveston was
absurd.
So when a storm started brewing on September 8, 1900, no one believed it would be any worse than previous storms. They gathered on the beach to cheer on the wild waves. But what started as entertainment soon turned into a nightmare as those wild waves crashed into the city. By morning, hundreds of homes were destroyed. Eight thousand people were dead. The city had all but disappeared,
In this thrilling installment of Lauren Tarshis's New York Times bestselling
I Survived series, one child finds safety only to head back into the
treacherous waters to make sure his neighbors are safe.

This book was just excellent. The author has a way of describing the events that were happening where it felt real. The storm and the fear that Charlie was feeling. None of it felt faked. The illustrations that were included also helped to show what was going on to strengthen the story.
One of the things that I enjoyed the most is that the author didn’t baby the readers. She didn’t skip over the gruesome details. None of it was overly explicit, but she didn’t shy away from the fact. Charlie was aware of the fact that people died and were hurt during this event. I respect an author who doesn’t use kids gloves when dealing with a subject like this. Terrible things happened during that hurricane, it’s important to show that.
I also really enjoyed the handling of Gordon and Charlie. I especially love the realization that Charlie came to regarding Gordon during the storm.
The story is a bit dark when the storm comes in, but it’s not all dark. There are moments of build up before the hurricane comes to Galveston. Moments where characters are created and identified. Where the area of Galveston is shown and described. Moments where little hints clue you in on what’s going to happen later in the book.
I really enjoyed the part at the end of the book, after the story has ended. Where Tarshis explains why she writes about what she writes about and about Galveston and the hurricane in general. It’s additional information that helps provide interesting facts and brutal truths.
I sincerely enjoyed this book so much and I am so grateful that I had a chance to read it. I do see myself reading more books in the “I Survived” series. I hope you enjoy it as well.
