"Are you saying you might want to get a little more dirty with me?"
Review:
At this point you might be aware that I am just a little bit in love with Ruby Landers’ writing. I have read all of the books she has put out so far and I have deeply loved all of them. Ruby has a way of writing characters that just makes me fall in love with them very easily. From there she manages to write engaging stories and settings that just draw me into the book until it’s finished.
One of the things that I loved the most about this book was the prologue and epilogue chapters. They are written in a different style from the rest of the book and I thought it managed to set-up and end the book in a brilliant way. The prologue manages to showcase the town’s point of view in a way that seems reminiscent of being the new person in town and getting the low-down from one of the gossipy people. The epilogue beautifully wrapped up the story by returning to that format but showcasing how the town has changed due to the situations that occurred during the book.
I love all of Ruby’s characters but something about Lara has her holding a special place in my heart. She’s definitely misunderstood by many people in her town but rather than airing everyone’s dirty laundry out in the open, she manages to deal with what they’re saying about her. I’m trying to avoid spoiling anything in this book, but you do become aware that things in the town aren’t as clear as they seem. Ollie is an absolute sweetheart and I think she made for the perfect romantic partner and foil for Lara. She’s someone who has dealt with her own type of issues with this town, but in a different way. Neither woman fully understands what the other woman has been through, but they have some similar experiences that allow them to bond.
The romantic chemistry between the two was palpable from the very beginning and I absolutely adored watching as it grew from lust into being something more. They didn’t immediately mesh and figure things out, but the reasons they both had for their hesitation was fair given their situations. There are several sex scenes in this book and I think they were written exceptionally well. It gets more heated and personal as time passes. Some may consider it to be too much but personally I thought it worked amazingly well at helping to develop the relationship between the characters.
The town in this book, Ribbonwood, is amazingly well described. From the descriptions of the city to the actual people in the town everything felt overwhelmingly realistic. Like I would have expected Ribbonwood to be a real town where I could go to visit these characters.
This book was a stunning read. It does have romance in it but I also think it reaches a bit towards literary fiction as well. It’s different from the other books Ruby has written but in a good way. It stars two amazing main characters that have to learn to get close to each other and trust each other. The setting is so unbelievably well-developed that I am deeply disappointed that I can’t visit this place. I don’t love the vibes of the prologue town, but the town shown in the epilogue is one I think I wouldn’t mind living in.
