The first meeting between Cleo and Billie

Review:
I’ll be the first to admit that Science Fiction is not a genre that I often read. No particular reason, it just doesn’t often catch my attention. Something about this book though, made me want to try it out. And I am so glad that I gave it a chance. I ended up reading the book in a single sitting, just glued to the pages. Thank you to Harper Voyager for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am obsessed with these characters!!!! Our main character is Cleo and I love her. It’s charming to see how interested she was in the spaceship and Providence 1 and the situation that the characters found themselves in. She didn’t take everything lightly necessarily, but she also didn’t immediately start assuming the worst case scenario. Throughout the book she was a very fun character and I loved how she bantered with Billie. She may have taken some aspects of their situation less gravely than her friends, but there was a reason behind that.

The side characters were just as amazing. I loved Ros and Kaleisha and Abe so much. I would happily read more books with this cast of characters in them. Ros was aroace and nonbinary and I love them! They cared very much for their friends even if that sometimes meant that they pushed their own care to the side. Abe was an absolute sweetheart from beginning to end. He very much gives off the vibes of someone who’s just a teddy bear of a person. He’s a historian and absolutely nerdy. I feel he got the least development of the three side characters, but I still loved him. Kaleisha was hard to get a handle on some times. She was a pretty serious character, but she also had moments of fun. She could be sharp at times, but the author did a great job of explaining that and not making her to be unlikeable.

One of the best things about this book is the relationships between the group of friends. These friends care for each other so much and so deeply that it was honestly heartwarming to see. There were tense times between the characters, but it never came out of nowhere. You could understand what was causing the explosions between the group and it was just likeable. It left me wanting a friendship like this!

The romance in this book was an interesting one. I really loved watching the relationship grow between the two. Even knowing how certain things would likely happen, it was still very cute. The banter between them was a lot of fun, even when they didn’t like each other, and their conversations got sweeter as time went on. I don’t want to spoil anything about the relationship, but I will say that I enjoyed how it was handled.

I only had a very slight issue with this book, but it’s one that I also understood at the same time. As bad things happen to this crew of characters, they sometimes snap at each other and get rude. Which is fine and understandable under the circumstances. But it also felt like (at one point) one character blamed Cleo very heavily for the accident that started the ship even when she didn’t do anything. It just felt like more of an overreaction than it should have been. Again, this was a very minor issue with the book, and it thankfully did not dampen my enjoyment of the book.

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I could ever have expected to. Science Fiction books aren’t usually my thing, but maybe they should be. The friendships in this book were absolutely amazing and I loved how important the platonic relationships between these characters were. The romance was easily one of the weirdest relationships I’ve ever read, but in a good way. It was unique and fun, and I was hooked on the growing relationship between these characters. I really enjoyed the ending and how everything was slowly peeled back and revealed to Cleo and the other characters.
