The young adult adaptation of the
hopeful and refreshingly candid bestselling memoir by the husband of a former
Democratic presidential candidate about growing up gay in his small Midwestern
town. Completely rewritten with new stories, including resources for readers,
parents, and teachers.
Growing up, Chasten Glezman Buttigieg didn’t always fit in. He felt different
from his father and brothers, who loved to hunt and go camping, and out of
place in the rural, conservative small town where he lived. Back then, blending
in was more important than feeling seen.
So, when Chasten realized he was gay, he kept that part of himself hidden away
for a long, painful time. With incredible bravery, and the support of his loved
ones, Chasten eventually came out—and when he did, he learned that being true to
himself was the most rewarding journey of all.
Finding acceptance and self-love can seem like a tremendous challenge, but it’s
never impossible. With honesty, courage, and warmth, Chasten relays his
experience of growing up in America and embracing his identity, while inspiring
young people across the country to do the same.
Nonfiction isn't typically my thing but I'm usually willing to make an exception for LGBTQ+ nonfiction books! If anything is going to get me to read a memoir or autobiography or history of book, it's going to be queer content.
I am honestly thrilled that I was able to read this book. I found the content to be very engaging, the way that Chasten Buttigieg wrote kept me hooked into his life's story. I wanted to know more about him and how he got to where he is today.
Books like these will likely always be important. Because kids need someone who they can relate to sometimes and that doesn't always come from people you have in real life. Sometimes it comes from people who live states away but wrote a memoir and other times it's from a fictional character. I think Chasten putting out this book was a great move and I hope it reaches the people who can relate to his experiences.
I find that I don't have a lot to say about memoirs. Each person's life is their own to live, so I can really only comment on their writing style and lightly touch on what they've been through. So unfortunately this isn't a very long review, but for what it's worth I did enjoy reading this book.
