"...I just want you with me."
Review:
I was really looking forward to reading this book. There's something about a character who has been through trauma learning to heal and trust again that I like. I want to read more books like that when I can. I finished the book and it took me a bit to be able to figure out all my feelings and put them into words. I think I've got it all figured it out now, so let's go.
One of my favorite things in most books are the characters. They lead the story and if I'm not attached to the characters, I likely won't be attached to the book. In this case: I was quite attached to the characters. Our main characters are Alex and Sigh. Sigh was so very easy to love. He's such a kind and caring character. He's got his flaws, no one is perfect, but he is amazingly patient and sweet and I wish for someone like him in my life. Alex is a bit more rough around the edges and could be a bit harder to like for some people. I didn't really struggle with that though. Sure Alex can be snarky at times, out loud and in his head, but I got it. His growth was amazing to witness.
The side characters are in all honesty amazing, at least the ones that are supposed to be. I don't dislike or like Sigh's brother in all honesty. He just exists. Emma is an absolute sweetheart and I truly liked having her in the book. Kids can sometimes be hit or miss for me and I am thrilled that Emma worked so well in the story without taking over the book. Also, Uncle Dave and Nat both seem like amazing people! Love them!
The plot in this book is kind of where I hit a snag. I explain more in the next paragraph, here is where I will focus solely on the actual plot points. I thought they worked really well with this book, these characters, and their relationship. Alex had a traumatic experience in his past that gives reasoning as to why he's hesitant about joining this relationship and I thought it was handled very well. Sigh was very patient with Alex and Alex eventually allowed himself to grow to trust the other man.
In all honesty, the biggest thing that I think would have benefited this book would have been an extra 100 or 200 pages. I feel like the author knew what plot points they wanted to hit and they did seem to hit them. The problem was the book barely cracks over 200 pages. There was quite a few plot points that the author tried to fit in that span of time. At first it was flowing pretty well, at least to me, but towards the end it just felt.jam-packed almost. Like there was barely time to breathe or solve one problem before another one was coming up. I would have liked more time between conflicts and more time to watch as Alex settled in at the beginning of living with Sigh. I just wish there had been more time.
This was overall, a pretty good book. It took me a bit longer to get through it than I had been expecting, but it was still good. The characters were quite likeable and the relationship that developed between the two was very sweet. There was a good amount of character growth throughout the book as well and it worked really well. It's a pretty solid book that I quite enjoyed. Good emotions and good chemistry between the characters. Pacing wasn't quite what I would have liked, but it's not necessarily a terribly thing. None of the drama was drawn out at least.
