Review:
I do love graphic novels. This was apparently a webcomic before it got published, but I didn’t hear of it. I only heard about it when I saw it as a Scholastic upcoming book. I was very thankful to receive an ARC of it so that I can experience this brilliant book.

Be warned that there is transphobia, homophobia, deadnaming, and forced gender expression. Just be warned.

Max is a trans boy and his struggle with his mother trying to force him to become the Magical Girl is amazing! It’s a rough struggle and you can see the impact it has on Max. Max is also a really easy character to root for. You want to see him become the Magical Boy and learn to protect the world, but you also want to see him come out to his family and be accepted. He’s just an amazing character and I loved watching him understand the ropes of his new position.

I also liked the side characters. Max’s best friend Jen is easily my favorite. She was completely supportive of Max and just wanted him to be happy and healthy. It was just a great friendship. There were some new people that joined their group as well and they added an interesting dynamic as well. I can’t wait for it to be explored more.

The art was gorgeous! I absolutely loved how everything looked. I especially loved that as Max started accepting being a Magical Boy the costume started changing slightly to fit him better rather than forcing him into a dress. I loved the look of everything. I definitely plan on reading this book at some point so I can see it in all of it’s colorful glory.

The plot of this book was probably my favorite part of it. It was a lot of fun. There was good action, good bonding scenarios, fun growth with Max, and just a very intriguing premise. I’m very excited for the second volume to come out so I can read it. Also, I feel like this could make a really excellent cartoon.
