Blog Tour: KINGDOM KEEPERS INHERITANCE review +

I am absolutely stoked to be hosting a spot on the KINGDOM KEEPERS INHERITANCE: SHIMMER by Ridley Pearson Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. I've obsessed over this series for years and getting to take part in a tour was everything I didn't know I wanted when I was younger. Make sure to check out my review and enter the giveaway!

About The Book:

Title: KINGDOM KEEPERS INHERITANCE: SHIMMER (Kingdom Keepers: Inheritance #1)

Author: Ridley Pearson

Pub. Date: February 21, 2023

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Formats: Hardcover, eBook, Audiobook

Pages: 320

Find it: Goodreadshttps://books2read.com/KINGDOM-KEEPERS-INHERITANCE-SHIMMER

In the near future, in the Epcot of Walt Disney’s imagination, sixty thousand people live in a CommuniTree surrounding the forward-looking Walt Disney World theme park. Five unique families are among the residents―and some of the parents were once known as the Kingdom Keepers. Their identities are carefully guarded in order to raise their children without special treatment, most of the Kingdom Keepers work for the Walt Disney Company, and have settled into “ordinary” and rewarding lives. When a messenger carrying a secret communication coincides with both a solar eclipse and Eli Whitman’s thirteenth birthday―a few “ordinary” kids are thrust into a battle to save Epcot and find their friend who has mysteriously disappeared. With their friend missing and their parents acting strangely, the Kingdom Kids discover they are in possession of unusual powers as they forge a bond to rescue their friend and uncover the truth about how real magic has entered their lives.

I enjoyed this but not as much as I thought I was going to. Don't get me wrong, it was a fine book. But I remember absolutely loving the previous books so I found this one to be a bit of a let down compared to those. (Note: those books might be tinted by rose-colored glasses.)
I do wish I had had time to reread the series in order to make sure I remembered everything that had happened, but I'm happy that that didn't seem to be necessary in these books. I was able to understand what was going on, as well as what had happened in the past, without much trouble.
I found the setup and action to be quite interesting. It didn't enthrall me like the previous books did, but I think that had more to do with me aging between books. For a young adult book it was pretty solid.
There were problems with these books, but I'm not going to mention them here. Part of it was just the pacing of the book and that it didn't exactly keep my attention. In a future review I will get more into detail about these issues.

The Sandman meets Dark Souls in Fearscape: A Dark Interlude - a world with infinite sequels, dark creatures, endless possibilities, trapped in repetition ... this is the story of how humanity escapes.

THE WORLD IS TRAPPED AND DOOMED
Trapped in a cycle of infinite sequels, the world is doomed to repeat tired tropes and clichéd conflicts without end. Unless, that is, unreliable narrator, notorious plagiarist, and sequel denier Henry Henry can unleash something so awful it deserves no repetition.

After the stunning success of Fearscape, comes A Dark Interlude, the story of
—No! The only offence to literature greater than the loathsome synopsis is the sequel. I will not stand idle while some poor excuse for an editor mangles and confuses my story, which is intact, perfect, and concluded, with this derivative drivel. Mark my words, this nonsense has nothing to do with my tale. I am not in it. I do not condone it. And you, dear reader, should not buy it.” –HH

But don’t listen to Henry Henry – the only way to escape is to buy this book!
Collects the complete five-issue series

This book was excellent!!! I loved every second of reading this! This book is a strange one, but it's a highly interesting and relatively easy to understand book. It's not overly complicated and I found myself growing very invested in a short amount of time. Once it started, I was hooked!
The art in this book was absolutely stunning! I am very impressed by the clean linework and the use of color. It all adds up to make this a truly gorgeous graphic novel. I enjoyed the story but the art had to be my favorite part of the book. It was what kept me going and pushing me forward.

Book Tour: BONDING review

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the BONDING by Matthew Erman & Emily Pearson Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

About The Book:

Title: BONDING: A Love Story About People and Their Parasites

Author: Matthew Erman, Emily Pearson (Illustrations)

Pub. Date: January 31, 2023

Publisher: Vault Comics

Formats: Hardcover, eBook

Pages: 208

Find it: Goodreadshttps://books2read.com/BONDING

“Wear your heart on your sleeve.”  That’s the saying. But in BONDING, people wear their anxiety on their chests – in the form of a  parasite that shows everyone just what you’re feeling on the inside …

WEAR YOUR LOVE ON YOUR CHEST

A man, a woman—and their parasites. Marcus has been alone since the loss of his closest friend and has just recently entered into the dating scene, while Laura has drifted in and out of relationships since high school. They meet, they have a great first date, and Marcus almost dies—because the slug-like parasite that everybody carries in this world nearly rejects him, its host. BONDING is a funny, quirky, and honest look at love, in a world where everyone wears their anxiety, not on their sleeves, but on their chest like big ol' leeches.

Fans of Matthew Erman's work on Vault Comics' WITCHBLOOD and Archaia's JIM HENSON'S THE DARK CRYSTAL: AGE OF RESISTANCE will find lots to love in BONDING. Fans of Image Comics' ICE CREAM MAN VOL. 1, DC Comics' COLLAPSER and even books like THE HOST by Stephenie Meyer and THE PARASITOLOGY TRILOGY by Mira Grant will enjoy this foray into all the stressors of dating...where a parasite is the least of your worries (unless it kills you, that is.)

Review:

“Erman and Pearson skewer genre norms in this sweet and casually unsettling comics romance-dramedy…”- Publishers Weekly

This was an interesting book. I absolutely loved the art style of it, I thought it was colorful in a muted sort of way and I thought it was quite interesting. It worked really well with the story.

The story was a bit...strange to me. Not in a bad way necessarily, but it was something that I wasn't quite sure I liked most of the time. My emotions about it are still kind of mixed and confusing but I did think that the story was interesting. It flowed well though and was built up well.

I saw one review for this book that said it was unsettling and I think that's a good word for it. It's not bad, but it throughs you off kilter. It shakes the floor from under you.
